Your successor is ready. The story is still in your head.

When you hand over ownership, the brand stays in the founder's head: the position, the story, the reason clients chose you. Leave it there, and it leaves with you.

The solution is to detach that story from the person and capture it while the founder is still there. Not to copy him, but to make transferable what made the company great.

Does this sound familiar?

We take out of your head what made the company great and capture it, so your successor can move forward without copying you.

The good news is that this can be solved. And it doesn't start with the handover, it starts with the brand.

We take out of your head what made the company great and capture it, so your successor can move forward without copying you.

The good news is that this can be solved. And it doesn't start with the handover, it starts with the brand.

"My successor is ready, but the story is in my head."

"When I'm not there, we sound different."

"Everyone used to know what we did and why. Now I have to explain it."

"I want to capture my way of working for the people who come after me."

We'll Explain

Why succession is a brand question

A succession gets arranged by the notary, the accountant and the tax advisor. They arrange the ownership. None of them arrange the story.

And that story is exactly what has carried the company all these years. Why clients chose you. The judgment you use to sharpen a proposal or turn down a client. The way of working that was never written down because it was self-evident. At a founder-led company, the brand was often never made explicit. It was the founder.

What's at stake

Keep that in one head, and it leaves with you. And the numbers show how often that happens.

Only 30% of family businesses survive the first generational transition, and 13% the second (Erasmus Centre for Family Business, with Rabobank and BDO). The difference is rarely in the product or the market. It's in what was or wasn't made transferable.

From founder-led to founder-inspired

Spencer Stuart calls the healthy outcome founder-inspired: the founder's vision stays the guide, but is no longer tied to his presence. It's taken out of his head and anchored in the organisation.

That's different from imitating the founder. A successor who copies the founder becomes a weaker version of someone who isn't there anymore. Founder-inspired means the core is captured, separate from the person, so the successor can put his own stamp on it without the company losing its identity. The story stays. The narrator can change.

And when the successor comes from outside

The same thing plays out, mirrored. An appointed director can't inherit the founder's story and has to formulate one.

For someone like that, a repositioning isn't a cost, it's an instrument. It makes the new phase visible to clients, to the team and to the shareholders who appointed him. The window is the first year after the appointment, while the course is still being set.

How Stuurmen approaches this

We start with what's already there. We go into the organisation: conversations with you, with the team, with clients. We look for what was always felt but never said. The position, the judgment, the reason people chose. We call that Shift the perspective.

We capture that in a brand strategy that stands apart from the person. One story your successor can carry, and that gives the team something to hold on to when you're not there every day anymore.

That turns a vulnerable moment into a foundation. You don't just hand over the company, you hand over the reason why it works.

Frequently asked questions

At a founder-led company, the brand is often never made explicit: it was the founder himself. His network, his judgment, his way of working. At a succession, that needs to be detached from the person and captured, otherwise the story leaves with whoever is handing over.

Before the handover is complete, while the founder is still there. The story is in his head, so he needs to be there to get it out. Waiting until after the handover means reconstructing what's already gone.

Founder-led means the company runs on the founder's presence. Founder-inspired means his vision is captured and anchored in the organization, so it keeps working even when he steps back.

Yes. An appointed director can't inherit the founder's story and has to formulate one. For him, a sharp positioning is the instrument to make the new phase visible, in his first year.
